Vietnam hailed for demonstrating strong commitment to gender equality in law-making

Ambassador and Head of the European Union (EU) Delegation to Vietnam, Julien Guerrier, praised Vietnam’s unwavering dedication to gender equality in its legislative landscape during a policy dialogue on advancing gender equality held in Hanoi on May 6. The event, organized by the Ministry of Justice in partnership with the EU Delegation to Vietnam and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Vietnam as part of a project aimed at bolstering legal access and justice in the country.

Guerrier highlighted Vietnam’s reinforcement of gender equality provisions within its Constitution and pivotal laws like the Law on Gender Equality and the amended Law on Prevention and Control of Domestic Violence, alongside its national programs and action plans.

He commended Vietnam’s significant strides in recent years, including higher female representation in the People’s Councils and the National Assembly, as well as an increased presence of female business owners. Additionally, advancements in girls’ education and women’s healthcare were noted.

Rana Flowers, Chief Representative of UNICEF in Vietnam, acknowledged Vietnam’s endeavors to fortify its justice and legal systems in promoting gender equality, empowering women, and combatting discrimination against them.

While Vietnam has made noteworthy progress, Deputy Minister of Justice Nguyen Khanh Ngoc emphasized the ongoing enhancements in its legal system and policies to foster gender equality across all sectors. However, he acknowledged that Vietnam still has substantial work ahead to fully realize its gender equity objectives.

Vietnam climbed to 72nd place out of 146 countries in the World Economic Forum (WEF)’s Global Gender Gap Index 2023, marking an 11-place improvement from 2022.
