Vietnam to Present Resolution on Climate Change and Human Rights at UNHRC’s 56th Session
On behalf of the Core Group, which includes Bangladesh and the Philippines, Vietnam will present the 2024 Resolution on Climate Change and Human Rights, focusing on ensuring human rights in the energy transition process, at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC)’s 56th session in Geneva, which began on June 18.
Since 2009, Vietnam, along with Bangladesh and the Philippines, has annually introduced a resolution on climate change and human rights to the council, each year highlighting a different theme.
Vietnam’s active involvement in developing and promoting this resolution, as well as its participation in the Core Group, underscores its commitment to addressing climate change. This effort also aligns with its foreign policy of proactive, positive engagement and responsibility towards global issues of common concern.
The 56th session, running until July 12, features representatives from 47 member countries and over 100 observer countries, intergovernmental organizations, and non-governmental organizations based in Geneva. The council is set to consider and approve 19 draft resolutions.
At the opening ceremony on June 18, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk highlighted alarming data from 2023, showing a 72% increase in civilian deaths in armed conflicts, with the proportion of women killed doubling and children tripling compared to the previous year. He urged countries to take collective action to restore peace, adhering to the UN Charter and international law.
