Vietnam is poised to emerge as a ‘dragon’ in the AI industry

Vietnam is poised to emerge as a ‘dragon’ in the AI industry, propelled by its resolute determination, entrepreneurial vigor, and forward-thinking governmental policies, according to a representative from Meta Group.

During a press conference for the Vietnam Innovation Challenge 2024, Rafael Frankel, Director of Public Policy for Southeast Asia at Meta Group, underscored the remarkable economic transformation Vietnam has undergone in the past 23 years. He attributed this progress to the indomitable spirit of the Vietnamese people and the government’s increasingly progressive policies, particularly in the technology sector, including collaborative efforts with countries like the US and the American business community.

While acknowledging Vietnam’s strides, Frankel emphasized the importance of maintaining open policies to attract global investors and technology firms.

“The (Vietnamese) Government should continue to foster an environment that entices investors and technology firms from around the globe to conduct business,” Rafael stated, reaffirming Meta’s commitment to supporting Vietnamese enterprises in fostering innovation and advancing AI and semiconductor technologies.

AI, alongside the semiconductor industry, is considered a linchpin of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, with its potential to revolutionize research, work dynamics, and content creation, and is projected to contribute trillions of US dollars to the global economy, according to the McKinsey 2023 Report.

Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Tran Huy Dong highlighted Vietnam’s proactive efforts to catch up with global AI development, citing government initiatives such as the national AI strategy until 2030, which propelled Vietnam to the 55th position in the AI readiness index in 2022.

Numerous Vietnamese companies, including FPT, Viettel AI, VNPT AI, and VIN AI, are deeply immersed in AI research and application.

Phung Viet Thang, Country Director of Intel Vietnam, stressed the necessity of a clear government strategy to bolster AI development across industries.

Meta Plans to Launch AI Products in Vietnam in 2024

In 2024, Meta intends to roll out AI products and services in the Asia Pacific region, including Vietnam.

“We are already on track to launch AI products across WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram in 2024 in Asia Pacific, and Vietnam is currently part of that plan,” Rafael noted, believing these tools can empower small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Vietnam to drive innovation and growth.

Last September, Meta unveiled its inaugural generative AI products, including a chatbot capable of generating text responses and photorealistic images. Meta AI aims to enhance user experiences on platforms like WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram by leveraging artificial intelligence for improved functionality and engagement.
