Kien Giang enhances anti-IUU fishing communication campaigns
Kien Giang province will continue its collaboration with the Coast Guard Region 4 High Command to bolster awareness campaigns targeting fishermen regarding the fight against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
A cooperation program for 2024 and 2025 was inked between the provincial Party Committee’s information and education board and the coast guard force during a conference on March 21. This initiative aims to disseminate the Party’s directives, State policies, international agreements, and local regulations related to sea and island issues.
Moreover, the campaign will focus on promoting regulations for the protection and sustainable development of aquatic resources, Vietnam’s lawful maritime rights, and the nation’s achievements in addressing the European Union’s (EU) “yellow card” warning. It will also highlight the role and potential of the sea and islands in national construction and defense, alongside strategies for sustainable development of the blue economy in tandem with national security.
Additionally, efforts will be directed towards empowering coast guard officers to uphold national sovereignty over sea and islands, ensuring peace and stability in the southwestern waters. The collaboration aims to counter wrongful and hostile narratives on the East Sea matter and Vietnam’s relationships with relevant nations.
According to Nguyen Thanh Phong, head of the information and education board, the joint communication campaign has yielded positive results, contributing to a reduction in the number of fishing vessels violating foreign waters. From 43 cases in 2020, the figure dropped to 16 in 2023.
Situated in the southwestern region, Kien Giang boasts a coastline spanning 200 kilometers, comprising 143 islands of varying sizes, and a sea area exceeding 63,000 square kilometers.
