UN Under-Secretary-General Hails Vietnam as Key AI Partner

Amandeep Singh Gill, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) and UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Technology, has praised Vietnam as a model of technological progress and a crucial player in global AI cooperation.

During a meeting in New York on February 5 with Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Vietnam’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Gill commended Vietnam’s visionary policies and commitment to innovation, digital transformation, artificial intelligence (AI), and cybersecurity. He emphasized the vital role of Vietnam’s private sector, highlighting leading tech firms such as Viettel, FPT, and VinAI.

Vietnam’s AI research and application centers rank among the top 20 globally outside China, supported by a highly skilled and passionate technology workforce, Gill noted. He encouraged Vietnam to continue its engagement in the UN Expert Group and the Policy Dialogue on AI Governance.

Ambassador Giang reaffirmed Vietnam’s strategic focus on science, technology, and innovation to drive economic growth, with a goal of achieving modern industrial status by 2030 and high-income status by 2045. He highlighted a recent government resolution on sci-tech, innovation, and digital transformation, which includes the establishment of a Central Steering Committee led by Party General Secretary To Lam and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

Vietnam is eager to share its experiences and collaborate with the UN, Giang stated, supporting the idea of positioning the country as a hub for digital transformation and AI cooperation. He called on the UN to help realize this vision and reaffirmed Vietnam’s commitment to actively contributing to UN discussions on AI governance.

On this occasion, the ambassador also reiterated an invitation for the UN Secretary-General and Under-Secretary-General to attend the signing ceremony of the UN Convention against Cybercrime (Hanoi Convention), set to take place in Hanoi later this year.
