President of the European Council: Positive Consideration of Lifting the IUU ‘Yellow Card’ for Vietnam
President of the European Council, Charles Michel, affirmed that the EU would soon push for the ratification of the EVIPA, positively consider the removal of the IUU ‘yellow card’ for Vietnam, and continue to support Vietnam in effectively implementing the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) framework.
On October 10, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, on the occasion of attending the ASEAN Summit in Vientiane, Laos.
During the meeting, the two leaders expressed their delight at the increasingly strong and comprehensive development of Vietnam-EU relations, especially in economic, trade, and investment cooperation since the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) came into effect in 2020.
Both sides agreed to continue expanding and deepening cooperation commensurate with their potential; further promote high-level exchanges and contacts; resolve obstacles and barriers to trade and investment; and collaborate effectively in new fields such as the digital economy, artificial intelligence, innovation, green transition, and climate change response.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh proposed that the EU continue to prioritize and push its remaining member states to ratify the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) soon and lift the IUU ‘yellow card’ for Vietnam’s seafood exports.
Emphasizing that Vietnam is an important partner in the implementation of the EU’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, President Charles Michel confirmed that the EU would push for the early ratification of the EVIPA, positively consider the removal of the IUU ‘yellow card’ for Vietnam, and continue to support Vietnam in effectively implementing the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) framework.
