Welcoming Costa Rica’s recognition of Vietnam as a market economy
Deputy Minister Nguyen Minh Vu highly appreciated the decision of the Costa Rican government to recognize Vietnam’s market economy status, saying that this is an appropriate step to continue to strengthen the bilateral relationship between Vietnam and Costa Rica; affirming that Vietnam welcomes Costa Rica’s steps to strengthen economic integration with the East Asia region, including efforts to join regional trade institutions such as the CPTPP.
On August 5, at the Government Guest House, Permanent Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Vu received and worked with Minister of Foreign Trade of the Republic of Costa Rica Manuel Tovar, who is currently visiting Vietnam from August 5-6.
At the reception, Deputy Minister Nguyen Minh Vu welcomed Minister Manuel Tovar to visit Vietnam for the first time, highly appreciated the activities that the two countries have carried out in recent times on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations (April 24, 1976 – April 24, 2021), notably the online meeting between Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Religion Rodolfo Solano Quirós on April 29, 2021; affirmed that Vietnam attaches importance to promoting friendship and multifaceted cooperation with Costa Rica.
For his part, Minister Manuel Tovar conveyed the Costa Rican government’s condolences to the Vietnamese government on the passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.
Minister M. Tovar highly appreciated the achievements of Vietnam’s Doi Moi, development and international integration, affirming that Costa Rica considers expanding relations with Vietnam a priority in its policy of strengthening ties with the Asia-Pacific region.
The Minister shared that the purpose of this visit to Vietnam, in addition to promoting economic, trade and investment cooperation between the two countries, is also to announce the Costa Rican government’s decision to recognize Vietnam as a market economy, thereby contributing to facilitating bilateral economic and trade relations, as well as cooperation with Vietnam at the World Trade Organization (WTO) and other multilateral trade frameworks.

The Deputy Minister expressed his wish to promote the exchange of high-level delegations between the two countries, as well as implement the Political Consultation mechanism at the Deputy Foreign Minister level, continue regular consultations and close coordination at international organizations and multilateral forums, and request Costa Rica to speak out in support of ASEAN’s role and viewpoints on regional issues./.
