Foreign Leaders Extend Condolences Over the Passing of Party General Secretary

Leaders from numerous countries, as well as ruling parties, communist parties, and partner parties, have continued to send letters and messages of condolences to Vietnam on the passing of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee, Nguyen Phu Trong.

In his condolence letter, President of the Philippines Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. lauded General Secretary Trong as a comprehensive and visionary leader, a beacon of hope for Vietnam, and a significant contributor to the country’s economic development and effective fight against corruption and negative phenomena. He highlighted the importance of the Party leader’s “bamboo diplomacy” in balancing and multilateralizing Vietnam’s external relations. Marcos Jr. expressed his belief that the leadership values and principles of the Party chief would be upheld and strongly developed by CPV leaders.

President of Germany Frank Walter Steinmeier stated that, as CPV General Secretary and President of Vietnam, Nguyen Phu Trong made a lasting impact on the country while enhancing and expanding Vietnam’s relations with Germany and Europe at large.

Governor-General of New Zealand Cindy Kiro praised the impressive economic growth and social development Vietnam achieved under General Secretary Trong’s leadership. She noted his recognition of the importance of the Vietnam-New Zealand relationship and shared aspirations to further strengthen bilateral ties.

President Ilham Aliyev and Prime Minister Ali Asadov of Azerbaijan sent condolence letters to Vietnamese President To Lam and PM Pham Minh Chinh. Deputy Chairman of the New Azerbaijan Party Tahir Budagov extended condolences to Luong Cuong, standing member of the CPV Central Committee’s Secretariat. Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan sent a message of condolences to PM Chinh.

Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen, King Philippe of Belgium, Emir of Kuwait Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and Crown Prince Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah, Acting President of Iran Mohammad Mokhber, President of Israel Isaac Herzog, and President of Mozambique and President of the Liberation Front of Mozambique (FRELIMO) Filipe Jacinto Nyusi also extended condolences to President To Lam.

Swedish PM Ulf Kristersson sent condolences to his Vietnamese counterpart, PM Pham Minh Chinh. Pope Francis sent a message of condolences to President To Lam. On behalf of the President of the ruling People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) and President of Angola, MPLA Vice President Luísa Damiao offered condolences to the CPV Central Committee.

The Central Committee of the Communist Party of Greece also sent condolences to the CPV Central Committee.

On July 24, leaders of the member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) issued a joint message of condolences on the passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

The presidents of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) foundation and the Rosa-Luxemburg Foundation of Germany, and the Soviet Peace Fund (SMF) of Russia extended condolences to Le Hoai Trung, Chairman of the CPV Central Committee’s Commission for External Relations. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan Bakhtiyor Saidov also sent condolences to his Vietnamese counterpart, Bui Thanh Son.
