Prime Minister Welcomes President of Australian Senate
On July 24, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh welcomed President of the Australian Senate, Sue Lines, during her visit to Vietnam for the state funeral of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee, Nguyen Phu Trong.
PM Chinh expressed his heartfelt gratitude to President Lines, as well as to the leaders, government, and people of Australia, for their condolences to Vietnam on the passing of their Party leader. He noted that the presence of the Senate President at the funeral underscores the close relationship between the leaders and people of both countries, showcasing the robust development of the Vietnam-Australia comprehensive strategic partnership.
PM Chinh highlighted that during his lifetime, General Secretary Trong had been a strong advocate for elevating the bilateral relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership.
During their meeting, the two leaders discussed key directions for cooperation between Vietnam and Australia. They agreed to continue enhancing collaboration in traditional areas such as politics, defense-security, economy-trade-investment, people-to-people exchange, and science-technology. Additionally, they identified new fields for cooperation, including climate change response, just energy transition, digital transformation, digital economy, circular economy, and mining. These efforts aim to further strengthen strategic trust and align with the aspirations of both nations’ leaders and citizens.
The Prime Minister also requested that the Australian Government and Parliament continue to support the Vietnamese community in Australia, facilitate visa issuance for Vietnamese citizens, especially students, and create favorable conditions for their lives and work.
In her response, Senate President Sue Lines conveyed her condolences to the Party, State, people of Vietnam, and the family of General Secretary Trong. She appreciated the political trust and affection that the Party General Secretary had invested in the Vietnam-Australia comprehensive strategic partnership, especially through his “bamboo diplomacy” policy. She expressed confidence that the strong foundation of the bilateral relationship would ensure its continued sustainability, in line with the wishes of the late Party leader.
