Vietnam Reaffirms Commitment to Humanitarian Assistance at UN Meeting

Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations, reaffirmed Vietnam’s dedication to international humanitarian efforts during the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Humanitarian Affairs Segment in New York from June 25-27.

Addressing the critical issues of assisting those affected by conflicts and climate change, the event was themed “Putting humanity first in the face of conflicts and climate change: strengthening humanitarian assistance and respect for international humanitarian law, and promoting effectiveness, innovation and partnerships.”

In his speech, Ambassador Giang expressed deep concern over the increasing number of humanitarian crises worldwide, highlighting the struggles of millions to access essential aid due to logistical challenges.

To address these issues, Vietnam calls for adherence to the UN Charter and international law, including international humanitarian law. Giang urged countries and parties involved in conflicts to fulfill their obligations under international law and UN resolutions regarding civilian protection and critical infrastructure, and to ensure the unimpeded, safe delivery of humanitarian assistance.

He emphasized the need for enhanced climate action to prevent climate-related disasters and their humanitarian consequences. This includes building early warning systems and fostering local community resilience. Giang advocated for stronger partnerships between countries, relevant UN mechanisms, and international humanitarian organizations to ensure effective aid delivery.

Giang also highlighted Vietnam’s active participation in international humanitarian relief efforts, including in Gaza, Ukraine, and Myanmar, and reaffirmed the country’s ongoing support for people facing humanitarian crises globally.

The meeting underscored the vital role of international law, particularly humanitarian law, in protecting civilians during conflicts. Participants recognized the need for increased funding for humanitarian activities, effective climate action, and a more coordinated response from UN agencies to deliver assistance more efficiently.
