Vietnam’s Pepper Exports Approach $500 Million

So far this year, Vietnam has exported 114,424 tonnes of pepper valued at $493.1 million, a decrease of 13.2% in volume but an increase of 20.6% in value compared to the same period last year. The average export price for black pepper is $4,197 per tonne, and for white pepper, it is $5,804 per tonne, reflecting increases of $754 and $849 respectively from the same period in 2023.

The United States emerged as the largest importer of Vietnamese pepper, purchasing 30,466 tonnes, which accounts for 26.6% of the total exports and marks a 44.4% increase year-on-year. Significant export growth was also observed in markets such as Italy (179%), Germany (103.2%), and Russia (49.7%).

Vietnam has successfully boosted pepper exports to several traditional markets, including the US, India, Germany, the Netherlands, South Korea, and Egypt, witnessing substantial increases in both volume and value.

According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), Vietnam’s pepper production is projected to decline by 10% this year, reaching approximately 170,000 tonnes, the lowest in the past five years. Additionally, the supply from other pepper-producing countries like Brazil, Indonesia, India, as well as smaller producers such as Malaysia and Sri Lanka, is also diminishing.
