Binh Dinh implements strong measures to combat IUU fishing

Binh Dinh has taken resolute actions to address the issue of fishing vessels lacking registration, fishing licenses, and seaworthiness certificates, commonly referred to as “three no’s” vessels, as part of its commitment to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

The province currently counts over 1,000 “three no’s” boats, primarily ranging from six to 12 meters in length and operating in coastal areas. Lieutenant Tran Dang Binh Dat, head of Mui Tan border guard station, emphasized that these vessels are prohibited from sea operations, with their owners required to sign pledges of non-violation.

The European Commission has underscored the necessity for all vessels to possess proper registration and fishing licenses to facilitate the removal of the “yellow card” warning for the country.

In addition to bolstering awareness campaigns to educate fishermen about regulations, the province is actively streamlining registration procedures, aiming for completion by mid-May, as noted by Nguyen Huu Nghia, head of the provincial Department of Fisheries.

Colonel Nguyen Van Linh, commander of the province’s border guard, highlighted the importance of fishermen’s adherence to laws, particularly the 2017 Law on Fisheries. He emphasized collaborative efforts with relevant authorities to conduct patrols and enforce regulations in local waters.

Furthermore, Linh recommended that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development provide support for installing monitoring devices on “three no’s” boats to enhance monitoring efforts.
